Give Puja Grant But Explain Why, Supreme Court Tells Bengal Government

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay West Bengal government’s order granting Rs. 10,000 each to all Durga puja committees in the state. The top court has however, issued a notice to the Mamata Banerjee government and sought a detailed affidavit from it within six weeks. The state government had earlier told the Calcutta High Court that funds being given to the puja committees are in connection with a road safety programme but the petitioner alleged that the money is being “distributed through the police”.
